Joining the team

Postby Mike Griest on Thu Jan 31, 2008 5:54 am

Hey guys,

Nice work on the new site! I really want to get playing but I can't afford to until I'm registered with the team and can skip the field fees. Any word on when you'll be able to accept dues? In the meantime, I'm working on getting the necessary paperwork together so I can take my NU van driver test ASAP.

Is anyone practicing currently? Can someone give me a ride? I'm willing to help out in any way I can. Thanks!

Currently, we have 2 practices left before our next tournament. These practices are closed because the tournament is coming up. We will hopefully have some open practices following the event.

Postby dcosta21 on Sat Feb 02, 2008 7:24 pm

When will the rec team or some type of team be set up so that we can pay our dues and start going w/ free entrance & etc.?

We submitted the paperwork for the rec club to be setup with NU in the 1st or 2nd week of January. Because it is paintball, we needed it to be approved by someone in charge of possible high risk student groups. We haven't heard anything back so far.

This is a prime example of why things take forever to happen.

No one from NU ever gets back to anyone. If you wanna get stuff done you gotta track people down and talk to them in person or on the phone.

If you give me a name, I'll talk to them and get the ball rolling.

I called Christine McGill

Postby Mike Griest on Mon Feb 11, 2008 9:16 pm

Here's a rough transcript of my phone conversation with Christine:

Me: Hi, my name is Mike Griest. I'm calling on behalf of the NU Paintball Club regarding approval for the formation of a rec-team.

C: Oh yeah, hi! I thought we we're gonna meet up?

Me: Sorry... I'm one of the students that is interested in joining the rec-team, but I'm not a member yet so I don't know the specifics of the situation. They told me that they submitted the paperwork in early January. They don't seem to know what the hold up is.

C: Oh OK. Well the team hasn't been approved yet, there's still a few things that they need to take care of.

Me: Ok, is this the kind of thing that we could take care of over the phone or through email?

C: Actually I'm going to need to meet with them. If you would, please tell them to contact Anita Brown (an.brown@neu.edu) she's in charge of my scheduling. They can set up an appointment with her.

Me: Great! Thanks so much!

C: You're welcome.

So, yeah. Someone in charge needs to set up an appointment to meet with Christine before any progress can be made.

Hah. That's awesome, I'm glad she could respond to our emails and let us know that. Rather than just ignore us...

Yeah, I was talking with a friend of mine who plays on the rugby team about their fundraising methods, and he told me that if you really want to get anything done with the people in club sports (or any other university staff), you need to track them down and meet with them personally. Otherwise they will give you the same kind of bullshit runaround that we have been getting.

I appreciate the efforts Mike. I'm going to try meeting with Chris McGill this week, if time allows.

I understand its just difficult for the club officers to have time to do this. Mostly all of us are upperclassmen engineering majors with part time jobs; in my case, I'm also in Air Force ROTC at BU. It gets tough

Just an update on this. The club has made it pass the safety concerns. However, there are still a few issues regarding transportation. I'm currently sitting on it for the remainder of the year. I will try to work on this over the summer and have it ready for the fall semester.
